10:55AM: So You Want to Help Animals? How to Get Started
Karen Franklin, President, 2DaRescue
Did you know that nearly 8 million animals enter US animal shelters or rescues each year? Are you one of those people who’d love to win the lottery so that you could open your own shelter and rescue ALL the animals? Do you know what it takes to start and maintain a rescue? Or are you interested in learning how to get involved in helping make a difference for shelter pets? So many of us animal lovers dream of getting involved in animal rescue and then - while rescue can be VERY rewarding - some are totally unprepared for the many challenges and the emotional toll that helping animals can take. Karen Franklin, Friends of 2DaRescue will teach us about some of the many ways to assist your local community by helping animals of all kinds; from contacting your local politicians to volunteering with animal advocacy organizations - learn how to be a voice for the voiceless! A Q & A to follow.
11:35PM: Fun with Our Feathered Friends
Debbie Schweikardt, Arizona Avian Alliance
Did you know that some birds can roller skate? A lot of people don’t realize the varied potential birds have for learning new and amazing things. Not only that, but our feathered friends represent something fundamentally important to us all - the need to conserve and save the places that birds call “home.” Find out how birds learn things from Debbie Schweikardt, with Arizona Avian Alliance, as she showcases some of the natural behaviors found in wild birds and how they can adapt to living in our own environment. Learn how we all can make a difference for these beautiful animals and meet some cute and quirky birds as they show off their larger-than-life personalities!
12:15PM: Pet Safety Starts With the Greeting: Preventing Dog (or any Pet!) Bites
Krystyn Hayes, Bark Busters Home Dog Training
It’s not only an important everyday issue, but one that isn’t given nearly enough attention: Of the 4.5 million Americans who are bitten by dogs each year, most of them are preventable. In fact, Krystyn Hayes with Bark Busters Home Dog Training, will teach us the warning signs (which can be subtle) and may be missed if you haven’t learned the many ways that dogs warn us leading up to a bite. Not to mention the fact that, throughout the year’s many holidays and other special occasions, our homes are bursting at the seams with tons of holiday guests - some of whom your pet may consider strangers, a veritable buffet of goodies and children who are running around and screeching with excitement (or maybe we’re the ones screeching - we get pretty excited!). All of this can be a recipe for disaster if the family pet is stressed, fearful or overexcited by the festivities. Come learn how to greet dogs safely and what kinds of steps we all should take when we spend time around dogs at this hands-on learning demo. A Q & A to follow.
12:55PM: Reptiles, Amphibians, and Creepy Crawly Critters 101: An Interactive Experience
Scott Robinson, Owner/Educator, Critter Science
Did you know that an estimated 4.6 million households in the US own at least one reptile or amphibian? Sadly, many prospective pet parents have no idea which type of these magnificent creatures would be the best fit for their lifestyle, leaving millions of animals misunderstood and mistreated right from the start. Learning about the natural history and proper captive care of these animals just might change your world outlook and get you thinking more about conservation and the environment as a whole. Join as Jeffery Robinson shares some fun facts and the fascinating stories behind many of the animals in his care. Come meet some of these ‘creature teachers’ in this super fun interactive experience! A Q & A to follow

For most of us, it’s a given that our pet companions are so much more than mere “best friends”: they’re beloved family members, trusted confidantes, weekend workout partners, can give us a sense of purpose, and - most importantly - offer unconditional love (even to those who don’t deserve it). Regardless of what type of pet you share your life with, pet parenting normally comes with its share of challenges: How do we know read their body language? Best handle irritating or embarrassing (or even dangerous) behavior issues? Know if a medical procedure is really necessary? How to prepare your home for a new baby (the human kind!)? How to afford your pet’s care after losing your job? Or if you should even believe the answers you found on Google? Taking the best care of - and sharing a happy home with - our pets requires more than love, though; it requires knowledge. Come prepared to ask away as Phoenix’s most knowledgeable pet experts answer your most pressing pet-related questions. Whether your pet companion is a Collie Mix, Calico, Cockatoo or Chameleon, our panel of experts are well-equipped to answer your most pressing pet-related questions!
2:15PM: More Quality Time with Fido + Not Breaking the Bank? Yes, Please.
Rachel Phelps, Pet Lifestyle Expert and Award-Winning Blogger, PrestonSpeaks.com (and Preston, the Westie!)
Whether you care for your pets on a strict budget or wouldn’t hesitate to purchase the latest luxury items, we all still love to save money. Rachel Phelps, Pet Lifestyle Expert and Award-Winning Blogger of PrestonSpeaks.com, will share hints, tips, and tricks on how to enrich your relationship with Fido by learning just how easy it is to take your pooch almost everywhere - both at home and beyond. If you enjoy having your furry family member travel and vacation with the rest of your human family, then you won’t want to miss this. And realistic options to further stretch that pet care budget are a super bonus! Prestonspeaks.com is the Official Blog of Amazing Pet Expos and a valued media partner and emcee of our shows.
2:55PM: Is a Small Animal the Right Pet for You?
Tamara Rothenburger, AZ Sugar Glider Rescue
As pets, small animals cover a wide range of the spectrum. Many people prefer small mammals such as rats, chinchillas, sugar gliders, mice, rabbits, gerbils, hamsters and guinea pigs as pets because they’re small, can live in contained spaces, and for a variety of other reasons. But, don’t be fooled - small mammals are affectionate, intelligent, and can have big personalities, which is a draw for many people who’ve become so fond of them. Many new pet guardians may become disenchanted with their pint-sized pet friends because they didn’t realize in advance that their chosen pet wasn’t a very good choice for their lifestyle after all. A little education and pre-planning can often help avoid that, which is exactly why Tamara Rothenburger with AZ Sugar Gliders Rescue will be discussing some of the important facts to consider when deciding if a small animal is a good fit for you and your family. Plus you’ll learn some super fun facts about sugar gliders!
3:35PM: Service Dogs and How They Help People With PTSD
Eric Wolfe, Executive Director & Founder, Project 22
The primary focus of Project 22 is to reduce the 22 suicides currently being committed each day by military veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder by pairing professionally-trained rescued animals with veterans in need of a service dog. PTSD is said to affect approximately 30% of veterans returning from military conflicts. Each day, 22 Veterans with PTSD find suicide as the only alternative to a life of suffering the after effects of combat.
Project 22 empowers our warriors to return to civilian life with dignity and independence. At the same time, dogs that may have otherwise been euthanized are given new purpose and a second chance.
4:15PM: Is your pet food really organic and GMO free? Learn why it matters!
Ms. Maria Myers, Owner, GMO Free Hiking, LLC
Do your beloved pets suffer from allergies or other illnesses? Have you tried feeding them GMO free food? GMO free pet food is not only healthy for them, but is also great for the environment!
Maria Myers has spoken on the topic of GMOs for two years in Arizona. Please attend her presentation to learn what GMOs are, how GMOs affect the health of your beloved pets, and how to shop GMO free. We look forward to seeing you!

11:00AM: Happiest Pet, Biggest Smile Contest
Oh. My. Gawd. Becky, look at that mutt. Her smile’s so... big. We can’t believe it’s so round. We mean, it’s so out there... Oh, sorry, you caught us singing along to one of our favorite tunes by Sir Barks-A-Lot. Anyway, does your pet have a smile that lights up a room? Is he/she just the happiest pooch who’s ever wagged their way onto a dance floor? Yes? Then this is definitely the contest for you and your best pet friend! The Happiest Pet, Biggest Smile Contest consists of two categories: “happiest pet” and “biggest smile”. Contest winners will be determined by our emcee and audience feedback. Plus - we ain’t gonna’ lie - the prize packages for this contest will bring a smile to anyone’s face.
11:40AM: Pet/Owner Musical Chair Competition
Musical Chairs is a doggy variation of the classic children’s game. Music plays as handlers walk with their dogs off-leash counter-clockwise around a rectangular area. A line of chairs (with alternating chairs facing in opposite direction) runs down the center of the rectangle. When the music stops, the handlers instruct their dogs to sit by verbal request and/or hand signal only (i.e., without touching them) and rush to sit on a vacant chair in the center of the rectangle. Oh - and did we hear the phrase “awesome prizes to be won”? Yep, we’re pretty sure that’s been a totally true rumor making the rounds.

12:35PM: Slobbery Smooches Pet Kissing Competition™
According to a recent study at the University of Arizona’s Human-Animal Research Initiative, kissing your best canine friend could be good for your health. That’s great news for those of you who happen to know that YOUR best canine friend gives the very best slobbery smooches! Why, you ask? Because you and your pooch not only have a shot at some amazing photo opps, but the pooch deemed the “Numero Uno with the Very Best Slobbery Smooches” at this year’s Phoenix Pet Expo will not only be the envy of bazillions of other canines and their companions, but you’ll both win some super awesome prizes! Be there or be square!
1:10PM: Pet Yappy Hour: Best Bark and Howl Contest
Well, it’s not exactly an “hour,” but close enough! Your best pet friend performs the catchy “song of their people” just for the garbage man each Tuesday and howls for their dinner like it’s an Olympic sport, so here’s your chance to let them impress us as well and win some extra cool prizes too! The Pet Yappy Hour: Best Bark and Howl Contest consists of three categories: “best bark”, “most impressive howl”, and “most surprising/unique bark or howl (meaning ‘Wow! How did that sound come from that pooch?!’)”. Contest winners will be determined by our emcee and audience feedback. Arroo!
1:45PM: Animals Got Talent!™ Pet Talent Contest
Does your pet have an amazing talent? Of course they do! Then it’s a good thing that bragging rights are up for grabs because this is your pet’s chance to show off and awe us all with their mad skills! Animals Got Talent!™ Pet Talent Contest consists of three categories: “best trick overall”, “most creative trick”, and “silliest trick”. Contest winners will be determined by audience applause. We just might be more excited about this contest than your terrifically talented pet (but Fido may enjoy the prize packages more than we would... as much as we’d love a shiny new rubber ball and some tasty chicken gourmet biscuits and all.)
2:20PM: The Petfinder.com Adoptable Parade of Rescue Pets

2:40PM: Simon Says Obedience Competition
Did you know that one of the best parts of obedience training is that it’s a fantastic opportunity to strengthen your bond with Fido? Well, not only that, it’s also a fabulous way to earn worldwide acclaim (well, maybe not “worldwide,” but the Phoenix Pet Expo’s acclaim and that’s pretty much the same thing). Let your pooch prove how clever they are by playing our version of “Simon Says” and see how quickly they respond to three of the following commands (using whichever voice or hand signal that you’ve taught to elicit the action): “back up”, “come” (you may not call the dog’s name for this command), “lay down”, “drop it”, “give it to me”, “heel”, “leave it”, “pick it up”, “go to place”, “play dead”, “roll over”, “shake”, “sit”, “speak”, “stand” (only from a sitting or down position), and “stay”. Positive Reinforcement training methods only, please. Simon Says consists of two categories: “best obedience overall” and “E-for-Effort” (for the pooch who gave it their all, but didn’t even come close to being in the running). Contest winners will be determined by our emcee and audience feedback. You know how well Fido listens to you open that box of treats; let’s see how well they listen to basic commands and win some cool stuff too!
