The Humane Society of Yuma is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit, and is the only animal shelter in Yuma County, AZ. HSOY is not affiliated with any other animal welfare organization and receives its funding through private donations, bequests, grants, fundraising activities and municipal contracts. Built in 1963 and last updated in the mid-80’s, the current shelter was designed to accommodate 75 animals but regularly houses 450 lost or abandoned dogs and cats. Outdated utilities, trench drains, poor ventilation and limited quarantine space mean that the staff is constantly fighting illnesses among the animals.. HSOY is fundraising for a new shelter and - despite the challenges presented by the current facility – it has forged ahead with programs to facilitate its mission to “ensure the humane treatment of all animals, reduce the number of homeless pets and promote the value and importance that animals contribute to our lives and community.” An off-site low-cost spay/neuter clinic was established in 2007 and now performs approximately 400 operations a month, the pursuit and prosecution of animal abuse cases has significantly increased, and “Be Humane” educational programs within the local schools commenced in 2011.. HSOY designed and is selling its “Be Humane” t-shirts in an effort to help raise funds for the shovel ready new shelter for Yuma County.
